Book
Coaching:
How
and Why It Works
Writing a book is a delicious and awe-inspiring process.
It's also one that can shove your muse into the Witness
Protection Program.
And
if you're a woman, you're likely scraping writing time
togetherwith a career, family, relationships, friends,
pets, and 592 other commitments yanking on your sleeves.
Unfortunately,
the things that tend to slide down a woman's priority
list are her own needs and creative dreams.
I
understand that well. I buried my own creativity for years.
I finally took a stand for what I loved, and that's why
I wrote my first novel. That novel brought me anguish,
frustration, numerous tooth-marked pencils, and more than
one near heart attack from computer failure.
And
it was worth every moment.
My
service is designed to help you give your writing, and
yourself, the time and prominence they deserve. Because
you're worth it, too.
As
your book coach, I help you savor all the pleasure of
writing and minimize the roadblocks so you'll come joyfully
to "The End". I want you to know the delight
of having the book in your head become three-dimensional,
complete and real.
"Having struggled with two false starts on my book
over the last year, I didn't know if I had it in me
to try again. The desire was there, but I felt lost.
After reviewing Katey's website and talking with her,
I knew I'd found a valuable resource.
Katey
helped me focus my creativity and set new, attainable
writing goals. She taught me that riding the writer's
roller coaster doesn't have to be scary—it can
be fun with the proper tools.
Katey
has a knack for saying just the right thing to keep
me motivated and working. She is especially talented
at evaluating where I am and how to get me where I want
to go. I honestly look forward to each coaching session,
knowing I'll be in an even better place in just 30
minutes."

My job is to be a catalyst for your books. At the beginning
we discuss your goals, your time frame, and what kind
of support will help you most. Together we'll map the
right path for you to finishand publish. Our "meeting
room" is the telephone, which gives you great flexibility
and convenience. We hold weekly sessions to discuss your
progress and work through any stumbling blocks.
Many
of my clients experience tremendous progress by committing
to complete a particular section of their book (e.g.,
a scene or chapter, a synopsis, the cover letter of the
book proposal) by the next session. When clients commit
to a deadline and know I'll follow up on it, they feel
tremendous reliefand find they write faster and
better.
I
offer focus, encouragement, and accountability as
you seek career progress. I'll also be your creative and
knowledgeable guide on craft issues and publishing matters.
Want to discover how to hone your synopsis, write a kick-ass
query letter, or attract an agent? I'm at your side. By working with me, clients have gotten offers of representation from many highly respected literary agencies,
including The
Knight Agency, Firebrand, Folio
Literary Management and D4EO.
"Katey, it would be hard to overstate the benefits I've
gotten from your coaching. When I first contacted you,
I was unsure whether I could ever write a book, but
you gave me confidence along with excellent tips on
how to develop as a writer. Thanks to you, I've really
improved my writing skills. You also showed me the ropes
on how to write the dreaded proposal and find an agent.
And now look! I have a book contract! It's no
exaggeration to say that I couldn't have done this
without you. And I've found a good friend in the
process. Thank you, Katey—you're the best."

Sometimes
clients share a few paragraphs of a scene so I can give
feedback or assist them past a "stuck" place.
Whether you share your work with me is up to you, and
it's normally only for short sections at a time. (For
extensive critiquing of your manuscript, please seek a
critique partner or freelance editor.)
When you run into problems during the creation of your
book (and such problems are nearly inevitable for writers!),
we'll work out the best and quickest way to sail forward.
You'll have me as your sounding board, brainstorming partner,
and directional compass.
Books
are like children; they're a part of you forever. Your
writing "voice" and style are integral to the
book you envision, and I honor that in my coaching. Your
project is always your creation; I'm the midwife
who aids the birth.
As
your coach, I'm a friend, mentor, and supportive partner.
And you'll experience the joy of writing, finishing
and publishing your book!
"Katey
became my life coach when I hit a major creative block.
She helped me enormously with dissolving that block,
and in the process, gently guided me to see, and address,
the issues that had created the block in the first place.
I never felt I was under any obligation to use her suggestions
on the path she was helping me define for myself, and
yet when I did, I immediately felt the difference in
my life.
The
very best part about my sessions with her is that I
felt like I was talking to a good friend, one with wonderful
clarity and perception. Her warmth, humor and acceptance
made it easy for me to get straight to the heart of
the problem and resolve it."

"Katey
is calm, focused, and mentally organized, which has
a contagious effect. She took just one thing and asked
a lot of good pertinent questions to help me break it
down, and gave real, useful, and yet simple suggestions.
I
also appreciated it when she accepted that there were
some things I knew would not workit meant she
was listening, and wasn't speaking from a place of absolute
knowledge and certainty. That's good because it feels
less like being told what to do as being gently guided
along, taking an active part in the process, and having
things organized. And we laugh together!"
